Right away, when this book opened up with the main characters walking into an immediately escalating scene with a police officer, I knew I was in for an emotional ride. Marvin tries his best to talk some sense into Tyler's head about not getting caught up in a world that he barely seems ready to become involved with. Bullet points are so much easier! 5 Although this book was extremely enjoyable and fast paced, it felt a little disjointed and too fast paced for me. THUG was good for what it was good for, but Tyler Johnson Was Here, is not meant to simply be a good novel--that people can have cups of tea, and quietly argumentative discussions of and over. I struggled with this rating, but honestly, a good intent doesn't mean a thing if I cannot get into your book. It's not the first time I am tackling the issue of police brutality through fiction on my blog. He often thinks he should do or say more than what he does, so when Tyler dies, he feels a tremendous guilt that he should have done something to help Tyler. I think the dialogue is pretty witty and sounds like black southern teenagers haha, I never felt like they were just characters in a book because some teens talk like that in real life. Do you plan on picking it up? I mean.. you are telling me a case that involves something like this wouldn't at least have the DA's office calling the family? Even secondary characters are well-rounded, with their own histories and 's not much plot here, but readers will relish the opportunity to climb inside Autumn's head.
