Seriously how the hell did Marvin not report this behavior to his mother or teacher? I enjoyed that this book was through Marvin's point of view because it gave the story a really emotional, realistic feeling, but I wish there was a little more backstory. It made zero sense to me at all. When they have an encounter with an officer in the beginning, he watches his twin become increasingly distant and he worries. For me Tyler Johnson Was Here is less about what happened to Tyler and more about his twin brother Marvin's grief. They'll even kill you to take you out of this world. His being a fanboy - specifically, of A Different World, and building on that, his application to Howard University (the other big roll call in this book, other than the names of police brutality victims with Tyler Johnson included, being famous Howard alumni like Taraji P. Henson. ) Though it was simple, it was poignant and it held so much significance and resemblance to the real world. It was goddamn painful reading this book. The book is incredibly timely with the race relations and political climate happening in the states. Overall, I liked Tyler Johnson Was Here, the cover is beautiful, and I wanted to read it from the moment I saw it. When I saw the cover and read the blurb, I knew this was yet another very important read. "Who do you even call when the cops are the ones being the bad guys?

I hated this book with everything in me. We never know when we might get murdered for simply being Black. And there were just way too many similarities with "The Hate U Give" so it felt a bit like this book was trying to piggy-back off of that book's success. I at first thought, she was just going to serve a purpose and never show up again, but she becomes a large part of Marvin's life. And a lot of times, that gets incredibly lost. Tyler Johnson Was Here is about a young man Marvin who has to deal with the unimaginable grief of losing his twin brother Tyler. On reread, I'm bumping this down to 4 stars. I never doubted that he was stronger than he thought himself capable of (albeit sad he had to be), but he was so incredibly brave towards the end. As the book continues, we learn more about his anger, his extreme pain as he feels like his life has been taken away from him because his brother was taken away from him. He just felt very bland and passive to me, and I couldn't figure out if that was meant to be intentional or not.

Despite not much specific development, each character feels just as true to heart. What I'm Reading Next: Scott Pilgrim– Bryan Lee O'Malley (but I'm not going to review these). And this is the first time his mom has made this? With excellent characters and a fantastic emotional heart, this book deserves so much more than being written off as generic or not worth the read. Marvin's life takes a turn from hanging out with his "high-ability geek" friends, doing homework, and binge-watching A Different World when a party ends in a shoot-out, a police raid, and Tyler's disappearance. Still, I flew through the book (which is a plus for me lately, since I feel like some of my reading has been plodding) and I was invested in the story. Also, Marvin and Faith had some type of relationship going on, but that wasn't the premise of the story. This story discusses gang violence, police brutality, and recovering from injustice in a powerful way. This book made me furious and woeful Tyler Johnson Was Here is based upon an all to unsettling reality that exists where police brutality is not uncommon and that police are feared before they are trusted by minority populations.

" Because I feel like so many teenagers get their hearts set on a particular university because that's THE place to go rather than because they actually want to go there. People on social media keep throwing around hashtags and advocate for Tyler's justice, while many others call him a "thug" and said that he deserved to die. Jay Coles writes with heart and passion, practically pleading with the world to redress anti-black police brutality. Ivy is great, I love her! This kind of ties into the third bullet point - all the bad people in this book, like the cops and the mean principal and the well-meaning, but white guilt apologist "I-have-a-diversity-checklist-in-my-back-pocket-and-that-checklist-says-I-must-be-nice-to-you-for-diversity-related-reasons" MIT representative are just hilarious stereotypes of white people being shitty in various shitty ways. The book makes you feel empathy and the burn of injustice. But someone is watching, and Pip may be in more danger than she realizes. I wanted to stop reading every five seconds simply because I couldn't stop wanting to cry. This is not the first time that Marvin and his friends have witnessed police violence. Their family is headed by a single mother separated from her husband due to incarceration.
Even the chants and the hashtags are the same ones being uttered in the streets today and trending today, word-for-word. This book showed the other side of the story, it made me realize how normal these tragedies are occurring and how little is being done about it. Also we have Marvin's mother call the police to report her son missing, but we find out later on that Tyler is shot by a cop that had to happen the same night he went missing. Periodic letters from Marvin's imprisoned father convey a poignant vulnerability, while Marvin's penetrating narrative voice captures the relentless anxiety and questioning that accompanies every choice he faces, from how to address Tyler's friendship with a local drug dealer to how to behave when witnessing police beat an innocent black teenager. Dewey's #Readathon Book 2 - I had only 100 or so pages left to read, so I finished this one pretty quickly.
I mean just look at it. It doesn't feel heavy handed. The notion that I should fear them was utterly foreign to me. I would have loved if these little details were not left hanging. FYI (since a few reviewers 'conveniently' turned off their reading comprehension after reading a few pieces of dialogue to justify vitriol against this book, even though the dialogue in question was challenged immediately after... lmao): A distinct message in this book is that racism and racist rhetoric can be perpetuated by people of any race. Amazing, highly recommend this book! The struggle of our young hero is moving and quite topical today. That much is in the blurb that's been known about the book for months, but what's a little surprising is that this horrific act actually doesn't catalyze the events of the book from the beginning.
