To characterize Erik, Gaston Leroux uses literary devices such as flashbacks, allusion and foil. The musicality of the stage production is evident throughout the graphic version. There's swooning, screaming and proclamations of love left right and centre (opera pun! ) His characters, from the fainting Christine to her hotheaded young suitor Raoul to the whiny, self-pitying monster Eric, are all sort of annoying, but the Opera Ghost in particular is a Heathcliff-like figure, who seems to have been romanticized and pitied in popular culture by people who either are unaware or don't care that in the original novel, he's a sociopath who abducts a woman he's infatuated with and tries to force her to marry him under threat of blowing up half of Paris. It would have been quite natural if she had said, "Poor Raoul, " after what had happened between them. Leroux, while intrigued about actual stories of an Opera Ghost, took it upon himself to construct and detail for us readers a very vivid, very heart-rending (and unfortunately, yes, fictional) account of the entire story behind the chandelier falling at the Paris Opera-an actual tragedy that spurred him to really look into reports of this purported Opera Ghost. Leroux depicts a wide variety of characters. He is way, way older than Christine and is completely and utterly obsessed with her. In the movie, there is also six months of relief from the Phantom during which time Raoul and Christine get engaged. It has been so long since seeing a silent film and I love how they really demand your full attention due to the fact there is so sound (aside from the music). It was also the basis of the 1990 novel Phantom by Susan Kay. Published in 1910, it went on to become his most notable work. While there really was a tragedy of the chandelier falling leading to some people dying, as well as rumors of a ghost, plus the underground of the opera house being full of tunnels and having a river. Also, in the book when he first approaches her and says something about knowing her, she laughs at him. I reckon the critics can't help but look at cheesiness in a Joel Schumacher film and not think of "Batman & Robin", and considering that Schumacher is nothing short of cheesy, whether it be on a "Batman & Robin" scale or whatever, I guess he'll continue to never catch a break, as sure as Emmy Rossum will clearly have a hard time breaking out as a major star, even with a hit this massive under her belt, and Gerard Butler will never catch a break when it comes to romance films of any kind. No emperor ever received so fair a gift.

Fail on these two conditions: death, disaster, dismay, and other fiendish tricks ensue. I will begin with the end. I wouldn't call Leroux's work one that needs world-building; I would call it a tight stage to work against in terms of setting, and he does that very well. In the musical, Raoul doesn't take Christine seriously at first, but in time sees the threat the Phantom is and they have the duel at the graveyard. In the movie, Raoul organized a way to catch the Phantom during the play and throughout the movie he is much more heroic and likable than he was in the book. He pledges to protect her by taking her away to a place where the Phantom will never be able to find her.

I liked this visual novel better than Helen of Sparta and Shadows of London because it had several satisfying endings, but I don't think it's the best story in Time Princess. Although the beginning is tense and nerve-wracking as people begin to die, once Erik reveals himself, the mystery is over. In both, after they interact, she is taken away by the Phantom which Raoul overhears. It holds few Christian values, though the study it presents of love in its various forms is worth pondering. Erik wants hope to transcend his condition, Christine wants to live up to the music and Raoul doesn't want the portrait of his childhood to break. He lifts his mask to kiss Christine, and she returns the kiss. In the musical, we learn his mother didn't love him due to his face, and at some point, was the "circus freak", this was also in the book by the way. In the musical, he is clearly messed up, but you just aren't as bothered by him as you are in the book and '25 movie.
