Purple = This is the unicorn of books and I will be rereading it until the binding falls apart and EVERYONE should be reading it! But I don't love the sequel as much as the original. The Last of August is book two in the Charlotte Holmes series. One character is poisoned. The forgery subplot, parodied-but-still-pretentious art scene, dark humor, witty dialogue, and action scenes thankfully leaven the relentless relationship drama. Byron and Lena strike up a conversation, during which Byron lets slip that Joe Brown is an alias of Lucas Burch's. Charlotte kind of drives me crazy. Watson and Holmes: A match made in disaster. I don't understand why I should care about these two characters completely missing each other's point. This all concludes with the death of August which wasn't really needed and it is said that it's not really needed in the novel. It's so unhealthy and messed up and god, yes, i know there are a lot of reasons for that, but honestly. I kind of think these two have to upgrade really, because it just seems sad for their relationship if Jamie married someone else or whatever. If you're unfamiliar with this series, the basic premise is that Sherlock Holmes and James Watson's present-day descendants meet up at a boarding school and begin solving crimes together. A lot of the backlist titles I've reviewed lately have been the result of audiobooks I've listened to while navigating those troubled nighttime hours. Wait til you get to Elmira Davenport. More than one character is kidnapped. I like Jamie quite a bit, and it's fascinating to see what a very young, modern Watson might look like. Other than that, I still love the characters. We learn that Christmas — and perhaps Brown as well — supposedly lives in an old slave quarter on the grounds of an old plantation owned by Miss Joanna Burden.

He tagged along and was kind of like the sidekick in the first book but now he's kind of tired of that role and wants to be a lot more involved in solving the mysteries that are going on though he sometimes pushes it way too far for his safety. If you wanna know more about what this series is about, read that review. It's hard to express the kind of love i have for these characters. He needs to figure out what his place is without comparing himself to his grandfather and I think he started to do that in the end but then Holmes messed everything up. I did enjoy when Lena finally came to Berlin and joined the plot. Really the side characters here are the Holmes family- which we already know how the holmes family is so they weren't that exciting in my opinion. →CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: In A Study in Charlotte, I felt like every character was a bit too simple and predictable. Bunch wants to marry Lena, but Lena seems consumed with finding Lucas Burch — plus she likes traveling. Charlotte and Jamie head back to England for the holiday break and while there stay at both their homes.
