It's very obvious what will happen from that point forward, though that didn't necessarily make the book any less enjoyable for me. Cameron's mother walked out on him when he was eight and he's never known his father. Her son Erik died 30 years ago under mysterious circumstances when he was just 18 and her husband Will died a few years ago from cancer. Marcellus is a captive in the Puget Sound Sowell Bay Aquarium and he may be a genius among octopuses. A flabby, fervid melodrama of a high-strung Southern family from Conroy (The Great Santini, The Lords of Discipline), whose penchant for overwriting once again obscures a genuine talent.
These small moments bring to life important foreshadowing for the main characters, but they also help the reader gain an understanding for the town and community around the aquarium, as well. Tova, for example, has endured the death of her husband and the decline of her peers over the past few years, and has to come to terms with the fact that she herself is aging and can no longer live in her vast, multi-storied house. For a time I was happier in chapters featuring Marcellus and that of Swedish born Tova than those telling Cameron's story. Are there any moments and stories in your life that have mattered so much that you recall them often? Or maybe, it would be more accurate to say they are stuck. Shelby Van Pelt makes good on this wild conceit, somehow making me love a misanthropic octopus, but her writing is so finely tuned that it's a natural element of a larger story about family, about loss, and the electricity of something found.
