Although most of the servants in the series are background characters, Lenox's relationship with his butler, Graham, is unusual: it dates to the days when Lenox was a student and Graham a scout at Oxford University. When I read a Lenox mystery, I always feel like I have read a quality mystery—a true detective novel. As a result, it is easy to bounce around in the series and not feel like you have missed a ton and this book is no exception. The supporting characters burst with personality, and the short historical digressions are delightful enhancements. When the killer's sights are turned toward those whom Lenox holds most dear, the stakes are raised and Lenox is trapped in a desperate game of cat and mouse.
