The references to 1992 brought back so many memories as Joe is the same age as me and so the talk about wham bars and Walkmans had me feeling nostalgic. It is a village with a history where many misfortunes have occurred and it is a community on the decline since the colliery closed thirty years ago. Throw Stephen King, James Herbert and a touch of Edgar Allen Poe into the blender and C. Tudor emerges with this delicious tale of a village, a pit, unexplained suicides and hair-raising scary events. It's a great storyline about a teacher, Joe Thorne, who returns to his childhood village where some horrible murders have taken place and where he continues to grapple with his own personal demons, problems and nightmares. The Taking of Annie Thorne was creepy, atmospheric and I totally did not see the end coming. It's gory at times (the author does body-horror unnervingly well) but still remains clever. Joe Thorne is our narrator and he's most certainly as unreliable as you'd expect. The Chalk Man was reminiscent of Stand By Me and IT, whilst The Taking of Annie Thorne bears strong similarities to another of King's books – however, to name the title might be considered a significant spoiler – if you really want to know, click here. Joe's return to Arnhill raises a few eyebrows, as the more mature villagers would remember what happened to Joe and his family many years ago. Wham bars - nice touch. I didn't want to admit, even to myself, that sometimes I was scared to death of my own little sister. I got the narrative style and characterisation of a calibre I was expecting, with a plot twist that I couldn't anticipate; this was one of my better reads of last year when you consider the five-star rating I gave it, and how quickly I read it! Years later Joe, now an unemployed teacher receives a email from an anonymous sender informing him that strange things were happening again in his home town. Joe was a great character, complex, deceptive but also strong and enduring. I wished that there had been more of a connection with each of them and they would have become more well-rounded and we would have learned more about them in a more organic way. But The Taking of Annie Thorne is way better than Tudor's debut. Such a well written novel with lots of twists and turns and questions as to what happened that it really keeps you enthralled! The same behaviour can be seen. A murder scene with a cryptic message left in bold red letters on the wall. However, while The Chalk Man was rooted in realism, The Taking of Annie Thorne pushes the boundary into the supernatural, hinting at mystical forces behind events. Looking forward to lots more by CJ Tudor... ….. Phew! Coming back means opening old wounds, and confronting old enemies and Joe is about to discover that places, like people, have secrets. "Gripping and dark, The Hiding Place descends like its very own mine shaft, getting creepier the further you go. After the way things ended with his old gang--the betrayal, the suicide, the murder--and after what happened when his sister went missing, the last thing he wanted to do was return to his hometown. When I first started reading this book, I wasn't expecting that this story would remind me of Pet Sematary. Secondly, it took me a little while to warm up towards Joe, not that I disliked him, just that I wasn't immediately on board but he undoubtedly has a good character arc and I can't deny that I fairly quickly started to feel incredibly sorry for him. I enjoyed the way you learn about Joe's life, past and present, then bit by bit through flashbacks you also find out just what happened to 8 year old Annie when she went missing all those years ago. The writing style is excellent and you can tell the progression from the first book to this one. They are the deepest part of the darkness. Have I been fair in my assessment and scoring? Stop reading this review and go and read the book instead. I've never really liked the term 'page-turner' but this definitely falls into that category.
