It starts with a woman held captive, then jumps to introduce the Raven. There was a bit trickery and star-crossed lovers having in the romance department. At this point, I also want to point out how wonderful it is that Pyr is re-releasing the CHRONICLES OF THE RAVEN at such a quick pace - one novel per month, with Noonthief out in mid-October and Nightchild right on its heels in November. I loved Hirads story, and The Unkown was a brilliant character. The third volume of this trilogy, Nightchild, is out in 2001 and Barclay leaves us hanging wickedly on a thread with just enough questions and unresolved conflicts to be tied up in book three. Mysterious, honest, and exciting from start to finish, Daughter of Redwinter has the goods. Dimensions appear to be important in the early chapters (a dimension is an attribute of space/time, but the author uses it to mean a location), but they disappear and don't appear to be important to the final battles.

I think this had a huge effect on the way I read this book and my enjoyment level was far below what it would have been not having read 'Elves' the previous week. It is up to the great dragon clan known as the Kaan to defend the rip in the sky from all the other dragon clans that wish to see break through. Should I read James Barclay's series in order? Cassi – The orphaned owl taken in by Lyana and her kind heart. Friend or foe, warrior or mage, nothing will prevent her from protecting her and Denser's daughter. The continent Balaia is split right in half by a mountain range. Each member of the Raven is a fully realised character, with plausible motivations and plenty of emotional conflict. But as the book goes on, the characters start growing more defined and the brotherhood amongst the Raven — a key theme throughout the book — grows more pronounced.

It was surprising when seemingly important people die early, but I felt this worked really well. It was a pretty quick paced story and once the action started I ended up reading most of the story in a day. How am I supposed to believe that the Raven never lost a member for 10 years but now they are dropping like flies because of silly mistakes. Dragons, barbarian hordes, sorcerers, demonic summonings, shape-shifters, and the threat of worldwide devastation are all tossed into the mix as the tale unfolds. And... "Kill, but never murder" -- really? The clouds dance across the sky. For a trilogy (and a sequel trilogy) you expect the protagonists to survive. A band of mercenaries who sell their swords (and spells) for money. If you're looking for intricate plotting and character development, this isn't the book for you.

It's a little slow to get started, but in the end it's a brilliantly-written and researched historical novel about the period, and really gives a great perspective of Roman occupation.
