Being able to think deeply about character traits for the characters in a short story or novel is an important part of understanding the author's deeper message. Click on the link in each title to read more about the lesson I teach with these charts and see them in action in my classroom. This one, Little Grunt and the Big Egg, is one of my favorites for teaching problem and solution. Students look at the word written beneath the face outline, and think of something a character with that trait might say. After students learn the concept of a "character, " they are ready to identify characters in stories. Love that about fables! First, we define character traits and talk about what is and isn't a character trait. Listing these words for them to see often expands their vocabulary as well! This is important because it allows students to examine characters and their growth, helps them obtain more meaning out of texts and helps them become more conscientious readers. We review asking words so they know how to form questions. Students will look at how specific characters respond to the problem. Anchor charts are versatile and appropriate for your students no matter their age or academic level. One such reading strategy is determining character traits.

If you feel your students might need additional practice before they identify these traits in text, you can work backward by assigning each student a trait and having them write about how someone with that trait might think, act, or speak to others. Leave the anchor chart up and it will continue to support skill development and understanding! It would be hard for students to refer to this all the time, because sometimes the character traits listed wouldn't make sense with every text.
