Chuck is shy, speaks English haltingly, and on the subject of his earlier life in Korea he will not speak at all. I struggle to come up with an opinion about Victoria Hislop's The Return. There are tales today of Andalucían villages still split by Republican/Nationalist sympathies and modern-day incomers innocently putting their foot in it. The magic of the first novel is missing but it is still a good read if rather clunky at times. The author has created realistic stories for all of the characters which felt like a natural progression from their lives in The Island. An author whose work I will certainly look out for again, as last time I learnt about leprosy in The Island and this time The Spanish Civil War, so much more than the romance that was also present in both novels. The place is the Greek island of Cephallonia, where gods once dabbled in the affairs of men, and the local saint periodically rises from his sarcophagus to cure the mad. However, the story behind it all was very sweet!

Starting this book I wondered would it live up to the first book which I utterly adored. This book took me straight back to being in Greece, both in a sleepy village and in a bigger city. When Sonia, a middle-aged British woman struggling to find space within her own marriage, travels to Spain for her friend's birthday, stories of Granada's vivid past are awakened — and her innate love of dancing is encouraged and ignited. I actually read the book with a detailed map of Spain next to me. Both sides suffer gruesome punishments throughout the book, the Catholics are severely attacked when the Moors are rampaging through the mountain villages in the Alpujarra at the beginning of the story. The first part of the book is very lovely and is about dancing. Though the wedding briefly revives Vix's old feelings for Bru, whom Caitlin is marrying, Vix is soon in love with Gus, another old summer friend, and a more compatible match.
This is not the sort of thing I usually listen to. It carefully describes local landmarks as well as telling an interesting tale to the reader. Length: 8 hrs and 9 mins.
