Sometimes all I want to do is watch myself be lazy. Between A Line Made By Walking and My Year of Rest and Relaxation, I've been feeling very understood. Mixed media is not my thing, space is not my thing, unoriginal plots are not my thing. Our protagonist, a privileged, pretty and rich young woman, tries to spend an entire year sleeping in an attempt to solve all her problems. Reading Saltwater quite quickly after A Line Made By Walking it was hard not to see the parallels, a young woman leaving the unmanageable bustle to live in the house of a recently passed grandparent somewhere in more rural Ireland. Rather than a narrative it was a series of scenes and moments shared across a summer on a Finnish Island between a grandmother and granddaughter.
But with Moshfegh's attention trained on history, culture, and gender, her trademarks—a willingness to linger in the minds of misanthropes, her relentlessly black humor, and her preoccupation with the human body's grossest qualities—start to seem more facile than fierce, modes that are ill suited to tackling such weighty matters... A quiet and unsettling thriller about the deaths of two small children. …you liked the TV show Fleabag or are looking for a truly strange but beautiful reading experience that's unlike most books! Told with the same unique combination of candour, biting black humour and insightful human understanding that caught readers' attention in her Man Booker Prize-shortlisted novel Eileen, My Year of Rest and Relaxation is shock-factor fiction at its finest. My Year of Rest and Relaxation is in many ways an ideal period piece of pre–Iraq War New York. In short, she leads an incredibly enviable life. As I've now come to expect with anything written by Ottessa Moshfegh, I thoroughly enjoyed Death in Her Hands. The story, strictly speaking, never leaves the unnamed narrator's fascinating, twisted, candid, perceptive mind...
Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to care for most of these characters and this dulls their possible emotional effect and the story's overall ability to make a lasting impact... I devoured this in one day. She so perfectly captured a sense of ennui and amusement that I myself wondered if it wouldn't be nice to just sleep all the time. Something that felt important to me as the writer, that I miscalibrated how much it would hit the reader, was the sincerity of it—the sincerity of her pain over losing her parents, and the sincerity of her desire to feel free. The Plot Offers A Lot To Discuss. Markovits has a real skill for describing how people think – there were a few moments where I felt compelled by how accurate a description was that I had to share it.

So, she forms a plan to sleep enough to be "reborn, " make her bad past a distant memory, and goes so far as to transform her apartment into a "sleeping prison" so she can fully escape the waking world. Devoured feels like a fitting word for a book filled with hunger-fuelled madness whose reaching emptiness is balanced perfectly by the fullness of its alpine setting.
