Devon Richards is one of the 17-year-old protagonists and narrators of the novel. I hadn't even heard anything was wrong with Headmaster Collins; he seemed fine before summer. By-and-large for both main characters, only their sexual relationships are really explored, and most of them are brief. Ace of Spades promises a thrilling mystery set at an elite prep school. The book manages to tackle so much ground. I climb the steps to the first floor, where my music classroom is, burning the depressing memory and tossing its ashes out of my skull.

The fact that he engaged with chiamaka romantically and sexually, filling her head with these false narratives only to stab her in the back and literally tried to kill her is sickening. Okay so I had really high expectations for this book, considering all the hype and positive feedback from numerous readers, but alarmingly this book disappointed me:/ I found myself reading the same sentence over and over again because I was extremely bored (if you plan on reading this book before going to bed then trust me when I say this, you should not! Bottom line: Things may not be as they seem IN this book, but they are as they seem about them! It's engaging, it's creepy, it screws with your mind, and when the big reveal comes your jaw hits the floor. This makes ZERO sense. There are other music rooms, mostly for recording or solo practice, but I like this one the most. They not only have their personal struggles, but they deal with a lot at school. His story is one that broke my heart and soul. Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé creates a dark academic story that stands out amongst the masses, she plays with certain tropes found in the Young Adult genre before veering away and turning reader's on a new, much more satisfying path. This year's prefect council will make sure it is a night everyone will talk about for many years to come. I used to get bullied pretty badly when I was younger and even more than a decade later, it still affects the way I interact with others and how I perceive myself. More insidious that just some sick fuckos out to mess with their rivals. But it was Jordan Peele's Get Out that really made Àbíké-Íyímídé realize where she wanted Ace of Spades to go.

Even more interesting is the book's epilogue where Black parents are still willing to risk their children's safety by allowing them to be educated in prejudiced institutions. Chiamaka has no friends, picks boyfriends to further her power agenda, and spent her entire junior year having sex with her best friend, Jamie, with the hopes that he likes her too. This is my favorite classroom, the only place in school that's ever felt like home. Both Chiamaka and Devon dismiss the possibility immediately, given the reality of racism is so prevalent in their lives that it seems almost too obvious a threat to single out since it touches every part of their lives already. "I'm Chiamaka fucking Adebayo—I don't need some prick telling me who I am and who I should be. This isn't a surprise for Chiamaka who has been working for this since starting at Niveus, with her goal of being accepted at Yale to one day be a doctor but does surprise Devon who tries to get good grades and keep his head down until her gets into Julliard. This has the odd effect both of making Chiamaka sound like an old (and twisted) sociologist, and of making it seem like the narrator does not fully trust the readers to understand the social dynamics at play unless they are clearly spelled out by someone. — that guy— scares the shit out of me, and two... My mind flashes back to prom, their intertwined fingers, their smiles.

Chiamaka Adebayo and Devon Richards are the only two Black kids at Niveus and they both have had very different lives during their time at the school. His father went to jail when he was young for crimes that are never specified, and he is put on death row. This is a very thought-provoking and timely novel. It's an exciting, fast-paced book with examination of perception, prejudice, bullying, racism, and LGBTQ+ issues woven through a mystery thriller. Here are your Senior Prefects and Head Prefect. Max, Ruby, and Cecelia are these giant, pale, lighthaired clones of each other, and next to them, my short frame and dark skin stick out like a sore thumb. I felt like I was holding my breath, getting ready for what would come next… only to be gasping out loud when I realized what was actually happening. This was a stunning debut with what I thought was a perfect ending! My high school was made up of mostly Black students, with a minority of white students.
Her journey with owning her Blackness rather than squashing it down to fit in was a joy to read and a narrative clearly crafted with extreme care. Àbíké-Íyímídé's connection to one of her protagonists ended up having a cathartic effect. I will organize this review by explaining the ways in which this book was so terribly not what it was supposed to be. Yet, she's also vulnerable and all she really want is to be good enough. Pre review thoughts. Without these, life at Niveus would still be an endless drudge of gossip, money, and lies. Devon's stronger and more engaging narrative voice carried this story.
The plot does not notably improve the odd characterization. I listened to some of this as an audio book and read a print copy for the rest. An incendiary and utterly compelling thriller with a shocking twist that delves deep into the heart of institutionalized racism, from an exceptional new YA voice. The combination of the haunting story and formidable characters make this book absolutely stunning.
