I started it, thought I liked it fine but didn't love it, kept reading it, and then put it down for a few hours - and my thoughts kept wandering back to it. There are two more that seem to be written in this style, but she also writes mysteries. It could just as easily have been normal pie and the interactions between the characters and their relationships would have stayed exactly the same. Can you actively mourn someone and let the past go at the same time? Like magic, the town finances and the town spirit are revitalized, all due to the blackbirds. Anna Kate is easy to like as is Natalie, the other main character through whom the story is told. I can vouch for the Blueberry Buckle and Lovely Lemon Loaf. If anyone can enlighten me, I'd be grateful. And while there is a feeling of resolve at the end, the door is open for more stories from the town of Wicklow.

Wicklow is a place anyone would love. I don't want to listen to people give me philosophical lines about life that could be cross stitched on a pillow. Essentially, continuing the tradition of baking and selling the pies makes it hard for Anna Kate to sell the cafe and abandon the people who want dreams and the blackbirds that cross over from the land of the dead to deliver messages. The women are guardians of a place where, under midnight skies, spirits cross from this world through a mystical passageway to the Land of the Dead.

One is Anna Kate, whose existence wasn't known to the Linden family until she arrived in town for the funeral, and the other is Natalie, the much younger daughter of the Lindens, who is Anna Kate's aunt despite being only a few years older than she is. Place the cake on a plate. There's no getting over it or putting it behind us. Turns out I liked it a lot more than I first thought. I hope there is a sequel to this book. Don't worry, I didn't even tell you about the Natalie story line at all or Bow and Jena, the mysterious kitchen help with a couple of big Magical Realism secrets.

Gruesome - a woman reflects a couple of times on her husband's drowning, that occurred before the book began. For Anna Kate, the death of her grandmother Zee uproots her from Boston to settle the affairs of the café and fulfill the terms of Zee's will. Twenty-four keepers, black as twilight. Still, it's hard to find books with good magical realism included, and the way that part of the story was handled was charming and fresh, so seek it out for that advantage, and see how you react to the book as a whole.

I used three medias to read this book - the large print, the audio download, and the eBook. It's a heartwarming story that makes you wish you could live somewhere where you share a strong connection with your town and the people that live in it. All her life Anna Kate has been kept away from her father's side of the family, largely because of the way they treated her mother when AJ died in a car accident when he and Eden were dating. When Anna Kate arrives in Wicklow, she is welcomed by the townspeople, many of whom welcome her with zucchini loaves, and at one point it mentions zucchini and cheddar biscuits. Despite her best intentions to get in and get out, Anna Kate forms connections with several locals who respected Grandma Zee and are regulars at the cafe.
Writing Style: 5 Stars. Self accountability whom'st? Some thought this very comforting and made it a ritual. The transformations wrought by all the brangling—particularly that of Seelie Linden—were too pat and too easy, verging on cheesy.
