Review: My Brother's Name Is Jessica By John Boyne
Displaying 1 - 30 of 511 reviews. This is a book by a cis person pretending to be a younger cis person. I'm not trans; I can't understand what trans people go through. I find it incredibly ironic that trans people and their supporters are the ones hating something of which they are ignorant simply because it exists. What you do is help change the culture of confusion, ignorance, and otherness surrounding trans people. My Brother’s Name Is Jessica – John Boyne – A Discussion –. Then the immigrants. I presume it's because of the wrong pronouns being used for a transgender person (in this case, a person born male but identifying themselves as female is being referred to as a brother rather than a sister). Unfollow podcast failed. I am sick and tired of stories about disabled people that are centered around the ableds around them, stories about POC that are centered around the white people around them, and stories about trans people that are centered around the cis people around them. We're recommending this for 11/12+ but it can definitely be read by younger readers who are curious about the topic and are okay with discussions of pornography - although many of the political jokes will go over their heads. A novel is not a collection of averages distilled down into a narrative, or it wouldn't be called a novel. And so, I've decided that, while I'm not going to actually review the book per say, I am going to do a post discussing it. John Boyne wrote this as a children's book, but, having read previous books of his for children, particularly The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, I found them to be so well written that they almost transcended the age they were written for, and were appealing to adults too. You're just looking for something to be offended by. With multiple problems along the way and the help of a wonderfully open-minded Aunt, this story is ultimately about the freedom that acceptance and inclusivity can bring. Review: My Brother's Name is Jessica by John Boyne. There were claims of mis-gendering and misrepresentation and the GEM- people should never write about things they don't know or have experienced. EDIT: There were claims that the Male Character (the asshole brother) assaulted a trans-woman and was never reprimanded. It's almost as though it was written because it's so relevant to current times, and so was bound to draw attention. That's not healthy or helpful in my experience.

Author(s): John Boyne. It was well researched. But then one evening Jason calls his family together to tell them that he's been struggling with a secret for a long time. Jessica's parents do eventually start treating her with respect, but again, harmful stereotype alert - she's their learning moment. Her name is jessica. This was one beautiful book. My novels are published in 58 languages. Jessica is the main character's sister.

Straight off, seeing the title and blurb, I can see issues. Statistically there will be more family members of trans folk than trans people themselves. He constantly refers to the Jason / Jessica character as 'my brother, Jason', which I don't think an older child would do. My brothers name is jessica hyde. The Dust Jacket is very fine, unfaded, unclipped ( 12. What Boyne was trying to pull off was always going to be difficult - why do we want to hear from the family member and not the person going through the coming out process?
Please come out of your white bubble. Kids are more accepting perhaps. The trans character is expected to be endlessly patient and explain things to her family even when they are treating her appallingly, which is not a positive message to send young people who are trans. A moving and heartfelt portrait of one family's journey to acceptance, from a master storyteller. Trans people can tell their own stories and we as cis people need to stop centering ourselves in their narratives. I didn't actually read this book, but as the spouse of a trans-person I can say that the title is both ignorant and hurtful.

Friends & Following. I found the way the central character kept saying 'my brother Jason' each time he referred to his brother really *really* annoying. Someone wrote the book was bad representation and hurtful to the trans community. His mum is aiming high, and she's got a good shot at being Prime Minister. This review contains spoilers I guess, though its nothing you won't see coming a mile off. A lesbian girl was repeatedly raped by her brother and cousins to make her straight. Fortunately, Sam is a good kid at heart and it is he who may best be able to convince his parents and perhaps even the wider public that Jessica is just as worthy of love and acceptance as anyone else.
Books are not merely there to explain and educate, but also to let the reader become aware of different ways of thinking and in that way, instil empathy and sensitivity towards others. I've published 13 novels for adults, a short story collection, and 6 novels for younger readers, including The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas which was a New York Times no. Firstly, the main character, Sam, is poorly written and unlikable. Please don't get this book if you think you are trying to be an ally, or trying to develop a diverse collection. Yet the reality is that we don't know, we are all learning and trying so hard to avoid upsetting anyone when the reality of changing identities and genders is still so new in our society, or at least new in the sense that we are only finally beginning to talk about it. He'd even been invited to train at the Arsenal Academy. We shall always find someone to find different, freakish, someone we can bully. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine.
