The sound quality of the music is absolutely perfect, though the bass is somewhat buried in the mix, the only real problem I could see anyone having with the album. The vocals are very well done as well, with the new vocalist Jon Vessano fitting right in with no problems- I couldn't picture Nile using a different vocal style. Their style can get monotonous in a long run, especially before you've fully settled into their songs. As the sub-genre (and metal in general) reached its nadir in 1996 and 1997, it was up to bands like Nile and Hate Eternal to pull the style off life-support and make it more than just a legacy sound. With classics such as Black Seeds Of Vengeance and the outstanding In Their Darkened Shrines, Nile have plenty in their arsenal to show why they are gods of their own making. Their immersive themes are a whirlwind of vivid imagery and the savagery of their music always kicks up a sandstorm of face-peeling brutality. Nile is actually a very original band, their music is a mix of Brutal Death Metal with Technical approaches, plus some melodic environments added here and there, few bands manage to make hybrids sound cool, Nile is one of those bands, now let me review one of their most popular albums, "In Their Darkened Shrines". Lo, it was only a few weeks ago that I connected Karl Sanders' heavily Ancient Egyptian themed death metal band Nile with the spells of the Ancient Egyptian book of the Dead. The predecessor featured a dark and slighly murky sounding production, and therefore "In Their Darkened Shrines" sounds quite different from that album, although the musical style hasn´t changed dramatically. I haven't listened to their work, like, properly, for a while now but I've always loved these guys. "Unas Slayer of the Gods" is one of their best epics to an extent that I don't even mind the opening Candlemass homage (assuming it's an homage). I found " Vile Nilotic Rites" to be more instantly gratifying than " What Should Not Be Unearthed" - insofar as that the songs are somehow less wilfully tech-y and seem to be a little more natural in their composition and delivery. It's a bold statement and a Nile through-and-through introduction that leads into the destructive ditty 'Oxford Handbook Of Savage Genocidal Warfare', which tears by like damned locusts buzzing up a storm of frantic stabbing chugs and skin-wrecking pummelling. And while there are some super-enjoyable moments on this album, it's not one I can highly recommend unless you're an untiring connoisseur of overtly brutal, brutal death metal.

Seconds after devouring an exotically decorated third of his Tut-themed, thirteenth birthday cake, Karl hungrily opened his first guitar case, then within a week, his parents would begin driving him to Monday and Wednesday evening music lessons, where Karl's teacher — a part-time performer for the downtown symphony — taught him how to play the Phrygian dominant mode and the harmonic minor scale — two cornerstones on which Karl's playing career would be built. It is midnight upon the Temple of Ra. And the instrumental elements aren't just ashes from the cremated corpse sprinkled sparingly, but actual in-depth, but frightful additions. Nile proves that they are one of the solid death metal bands with technicality in their music to make them memorable for years to come. Sadly, this album would not be considered perfect.

On that basis, it's one of the best death metal albums you will hear this year but only time will tell how this fares in the overall Nile discography. The band also aimed for maximum heaviness on this release, as opposed to the musicianship focused approach of the previous record. The improved production values, compared to the two preceding studio albums, only further strengthens my positive feelings toward the album.
That's all there really is to the single other than the typical death aspects of speedy playing and Nile's mystic flare so an album full of similar songs will be a bit boring.
