For today's first post I am delighted to be reviewing The Thousand Deaths of Ardor Benn the first book in the Kingdom of Grit series by Tyler Whitesides. Wouldn't have hurt them to have another member of crew. Excellent on trauma and healing, the other stuff? There is more to him than first appears. It's a bit unbelievable at times, a lot of the time really, but it was loads of fun, super tricksy, I liked the characters, and it keeps you on your toes. A brother and sister are orphaned in an isolated cove on Newfoundland's northern coastline. The world is a collection of islands, and the religion is based around the theme of islands. The author manages to keep the interest alive, and for all the length of the book! Disclaimer – I received an e-arc via netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Do you love fantasy but you've been tired of the same old magic system book after book? The heist is one of my favourite types of plot. The first half of the book focuses on the heist. So I have never heard of a magic system that simply consists of dragon poop, and even if one might think that this makes it seem a little ridiculous, it is extremely exciting to see how this magic is extracted in order to later create something magical from this natural product. Nothing about the case made sense to friends of the founder of one of the world's largest generic pharmaceutical firms and his wife.... Narrated by: Jay Snyder. Naturally their depleted numbers are a concern and a source of one conflict in the story. As for how the Grit is made…let's just say it involves the very dangerous process of tricking a dragon into eating certain substances and waiting for it to be…processed through the dragon's digestive track. To be honest, there are a lot of good things in this book, but… But the best of them all was that this book was highly fun. However, given that this is the first of a trilogy, I am willing to assume that meaner, more credible baddies will rear their heads as the series progresses. It's like a nicer version of The Lies of Locke Lamora, which is one of my favorite books of all time.

There are a number of moments when things don't go according to plan and a rethink is required. The world building was alot of fun, especially the magic system, although it did remind me a bit of Mistborns magic system a tad. No strong language – no sexual content – some bloody monster violence. 'Well, I'm certainly not bored, ' thought Ardor Benn. Ardor + Tanalin = passionate. Two stars because I love con artist stories, but I think the biggest con was getting anyone to read this. And I read a lot of books. Thank you to Orbit books for the review copy of this book. Perhaps my own insecurities cause me to see things the wrong way.
As a reader, it is easy to be in his mind. Can't find what you're looking for? It was almost like the author had this idea at the beginning of writing that he wanted a romance and made these characters who would have been better as simply being friends have a romantic interest in each other. Getting almost 700 pages into a book to have the issue resolved the way it was was not as satisfying as if I had had some inkling that the resolution was even a possibility. If you've read it, or read it in the future, please feel free to shout at me about this fantastic book. It's a great scene that shows how the magic works, introduces characters, and is just fun to watch.

Now I'm a pretty firm believer that a fantasy book doesn't need to be 700-800 pages long. I'm fine with real-world alcohol used in fantasy books unless, of course, it's something that can only exist if it comes from a certain real-world country. Although I liked the magic system, it seemed that every time the magic was used the author felt the need to explain it to the last detail and not trust the reader to fill in the blanks. Elbrig Taut and Cinza Ortemion – "the crazies" who specialize in alternative identities, disguises, and costumes (seriously I love them! The characters in this book use a lot of grit - magical dragon dung - for their plans. But gonna read the other two books eventually. If the author had simply used whiskey, that would've been fine for me, but Scotch whisky can only be called Scotch if it comes from Scotland and I'm pretty sure Scotland doesn't exist in this fantasy world. Series: THE KINGDOM OF GRIT, Book One. Ardor is a ruse artist, when I read that I was really excited. I would have liked to write something a bit more insightful for this book, something to make it justice because, even if it is not perfect and there were some things that didn't sit so well with me, it would have deserved a proper review.
