As a rule, single sentences should not be written or printed as paragraphs. A common violation of conciseness is the presentation of a single complex idea, step by step, in a series of sentences or independent clauses which might to advantage be combined into one. Punctuation marks like comma and dash used for appositive phrases should be to blame for my confusion.
