Sam is a loser and his quest ludicrous; and the film knows that. Episodic execution and scrambled storytelling will turn people off, however, as Mitchell leans into more avant-garde ambiguity and symbolism and this can definitely begin to irritate. Its characters live in LA's Eastside, a contested area that includes the hipster enclave Silver Lake and feels a long way from the beach. Here Under the Silver Lake can only muster a performative yawn. He seemingly finds a new mystery, an even more banal one to keep himself distracted. Finding her will become both Sam's obsession and the first pulled thread of his unraveling sanity for the next two-plus shambling hours. "Good to be here, " he says. More than that, I kind of dug its sheer swing-for-the-fences insanity. She sashays about looking great in a white two-piece bathing costume.

Mining a noir tradition extending from Kiss Me Deadly and The Long Goodbye to Chinatown and Mulholland Drive, Mitchell uses the topography of Los Angeles as a backdrop for a deeper exploration into the hidden meaning and secret codes buried within the things we love. At one point, he gets sprayed by a skunk. I witnessed this same cat do this every day, but sometimes if it saw me it would drop the leaf and then scamper away. I recently watched the film Under the Silver Lake and have been thinking about it since.

The next thing I thought was that it's a shame most people won't bother watching it or won't appreciate it if they do. But that doesn't really do it either. While Sam initiates his journey to find a missing girl, it soon becomes clear that he is merely drifting along in a conspiracy that is bigger than himself. He stumbles through the highs and lows of Movie Town, convinced there are secret codes everywhere that will lead him to her, if only he can break them. The closest thing he has to a roadmap is a portentous undergound zine called Under the Silver Lake, which tries to warn Angelenos about serial dog killers on the prowl and naked female assassins in owl masks. Their group becomes their identity. And someone else is always profiting. So leads Sam on his own personal-quest through a very Lynchian underbelly of Los Angeles as he tries to find out what happened to Sarah. But one day a new girl appears in the neighbour, sexy and inviting. At every turn it's the most basic version of what it could otherwise be, and for all its affected indifference it desperately wants you to know it knows this too. More movie reviews: |type|. Along with finding her entire apartment empty, Sam finds a symbol painted on the wall. Shooting in predominantly wide-lenses and framing subjects most often in the middle of the screen, Gioulakis and Robert Mitchell both interrogate their characters and lend cinematic scope to a film that is often shot in cramped apartments and familiar locations (bookshops, bars, on the streets).

And the film's barrage of dream-logic surrealism should pay royalties to the Lost Highway-era David Lynch. With each cynical little jab, Mitchell counterbalances with a moment of sweet nostalgia or personal recollection – of the tumult of cultural references, most certainly hark back to the director's formative years. Silver Lake has having a spate of dog killings; Sam finds a weird home-grown comic/magazine at a local bookstore, hooks up with the author, gets a huge dose of local conspiracy theories, including one of a naked woman with an owl mask who kills people in the middle of the night, etc. It's this type of protagonist that helps make Under the Silver Lake so successful. We're not meant to like Sam, exactly, but being trapped inside his fixations – a potentially maddening dollhouse purgatory – is a strangely compulsive predicament. He's about to be evicted and behind on his car payments, and longs for an experience to lift him from this reality. The film offers a stream of ideas, rather than shaped arguments.

Apart from the inclusion of codes, what does it all mean? Andrew Garfield stars opposite Keough, in a Los Angeles-set thriller in which Garfield searches "for the truth behind the mysterious crimes, murders and disappearances in his East L. A. neighborhood. " The performances are decent, and sure, there's a lot of wank happening here, but some originality too, and that goes a long way. Often neo-noir is full of red herrings and plots that lead nowhere, a device that Under the Silver Lake embraces so gleefully that it eventually becomes clear it's exaggerating the genre for effect. The Owl's Kiss is a naked woman in an owl mask who creeps into homes at night to kill men and women. Under the Silver Lake isn't an homage so much as a remix of classic Hollywood tropes, which positions itself and its contemporary hipster characters less as the continuation of history than the end of it. Perhaps the film's transient supporting cast of megababes – raising eyebrows every time they disrobe – make the most sense if you see every single one of them as a surrogate Grace Kelly.

Cast: Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, Topher Grace, Zosia Mamet, Jimmi Simpson, Patrick Fischler, Luke Baines, Callie Hernandez, Riki Lindhome, Don McManus. It's typical of his self-indulgent confusion. It's populated by familiar types lifted from the movies: the mysterious femmes fatales, the free-spirited artists, the topless, eccentric, bird-raising neighbors, the wisecracking friends, and the grizzled, aimless detective type who finds himself always one step behind a plot that turns out to be much wilder than he could have anticipated.
Sam hangs around smoking, taking calls from his mom, indolently watching through binoculars his older female neighbour walk around on her balcony semi-nude, jerking off, sometimes having sex with an actor friend-with-benefits who occasionally stops by in a cute audition costume. I don't know if the statement Mitchell is trying to make really should have taken two hours and twenty to get there. All the things that happen to Sam – including a full-in-the-face skunk spraying which makes everyone recoil from him for the rest of the movie – essentially plant a toxic waste sign on his forehead. He's made a hipster conspiracy thriller about a guy who goes so far down an existential rabbit hole that it sucked Mitchell down with him. The author of the comic zine writes that her motives are unknown, but he believes she is "a member of a cult with origins in trade and finance. "
