In general, I steer clear of religion in books (and life if I'm being perfectly honest) as a rule of thumb, so this was tough for me to see past. And then there are mom and dad. There were times in the book where Jacob showed a lot of insight or wrote a really beautiful passage, but those moments were overshadowed for me by their smug tone and seeming lack of self-awareness. But it just really read to me like a privileged person throwing a fit because they didn't get something they wanted. The authors personal stories, are the next best thing, to having them over for lunch. Happy you had a good life and had minor struggles. God made me white, I didn't choose it. Those narratives are valuable, but this book is a breath of fresh air and a great look into a part of the queer community whose voice is often unheard.
