Short Shaft Outboard Vs Long Shaft
I guess one solution is to buy an aluminum boat suited to a long shaft... It's also hard to refill that battery from a jug! Thanks everyone for the advice. Very capable little boat. I am seeing a lot of long shaft 25HP motors. Please suggest whether a long shaft would be suitable, or would I be inviting trouble. 9 short shaft and it is horrible on how little you have to turn at a higher speed and its like it loses its hold in the water, the motor revs up and your off the gas until the prop grabs again. Those are the lightest weight motors in each of those power ranges. A properly set up outboard will have the cavitation plate only about 1/4" below the hull IIRC. "Big" sailboat guys use a rule-of-thumb of 2hp per 1000lbs displacement for power, it's easy enough to figure out your weight of boat, crew and gear and come up with a figure if you were in a "power critical" situation. However, I have the chance to buy a long shaft 9. But if you were in that situation, you'd probably want more motor. If someone gave me a long shaft outboard, I might try mounting it on a jacking plate, but If I was buying the outboard, I would buy a short shaft outboard, rather than deal with the possible side effects of mounting a long shaft outboard on a short transom. I am thinking about adding the extension and longer drive shaft.

It will be nice to have this thread here for some other noob to search for in the future. Here is links to those jack plates that I have used: Yes, Lund does make 14' with the high transom that takes a long shaft. I run a 14 foot Chrestliner with a 15 horse Honda short shaft on the back. They hold their value well too if you ever feel the need to sell it. Saved us a pile of money, because we brought our own gas and mix oil. I'm assuming two stroke but a four stroke applies as well. And I guess it is good advice to buy the boat before deciding long or short. The determining factor for using a short shaft vs. a long shaft is the depth or your transom. The boat always feels heavy in the water and really bogged down when the gas is delivered. The owner of the place did not have a problem with a dry rental boat. The waters out here on the Pacific coast have some pretty decent current and swells to them so most of the more adventurous boaters who do venture out on them tend to keep their motors performing at peak so having something with a shorter shaft is really ideal for those of us who need the increased maneuverability and handling. If it is closer to 20" it requires a long shaft motor. I have read some about where long shafts and short shafts are suitable.
I don't believe it would be a total disaster and it would certainly be easy to sell as older two strokes are hard to come by. I have a 15HP short shaft but need a 25HP. Shaft is about 6" but this is only going by memory. Let me ask the question another way. The difference between a long shat and a short. Only accurate guns are interesting. Also though, I suspect that the U20 outboard bracket would be a limiting factor to adding too much power. That motor would turn you on a dime at any speed and hold the water.

9 Johnson long shaft on my 26' sailboat. The ski twin i have wieghs in at 140 pounds and the tohatsu that i bought weighs in at 173 pounds. I measured the leg on the evinrude and it appears to be around 18 inches. Would it be better to keep the 20 inch shaft and build up the transom a couple inches so it sits a bit higher in case the boat dips a bit or get the short shaft? Maybe not as "polished" a product as some might expect from Honda, air-cooled, single cylinder so a little bit noisy and vibe-y, no frills, but that makes maintenance easy. Are there some makes where the conversion is easy and others where it is not or impossible? If your transom depth is 15" - 16" you need a short shaft motor. As to whether the boat will perform adequately, that will vary depending on the particular hull. All times are GMT -6. You may have to adust it for the best planing position as well. The depth of your transom determines the length of shaft, 15" transom is a short shaft a 20" is a long shaft, if the boat has a 20 " transom your okay. I spent quite some time looking for a decent long shaft here as a kicker for my boat. Now I am able to be well past the markers before the wife even notices that I am gone! Most long stats that I am familiar with have an extension in the shaft that can be taken out but you need a shorter drive shaft.
I have an old 1960 starcraft jet that ive been slowly fixing up for the last 5 years and its time for a new motor. That's the best i can explain what happens with our short shaft.

I searched here and on the Yahoo list and this question hadn't been addressed that I could find. I bought the long shaft to be used when we went to our favorite Northern Sask lake. That's with an Evinrude but they are all similar. Honestly when it works its a great motor, but several times a season its down for various repairs which isn't surprising for its age.
