By an act approved the 14th day of March, 1908, the General Assembly of Virginia authorized the establishment of an Agricultural high school in each congressional district of the State; and during the following year, through the efforts of H. The expenses incurred under the authority of the law for the year 1880 (the 14th year of the County's existence) seem to have been less than $1, 000, whereas today the County's annual expenditures amount to more than $400, 000, approximately one-half of which is spent for schools. Some have operated over a long period of years, but several have ceased to exist. For the 45-year period under review, we see that the greatest number of farms were operated by tenants in 1910; and that the smallest number of farms were operated by tenants in 1890. It is applied according to a sliding scale; and the percentage that the inheritance is taxed varies in accordance with the amount of the inheritance, and the relationship between the beneficiary and the individual to whom the property formerly belonged. Forty-five of these were in the Castlewood district; thirty-five were in the New Garden district; thirty-two were in the Cleveland district; twenty were in the Lebanon district; nineteen were in the Copper Creek district; fifteen were in the Moccasin district; and nine were in the Elk Garden district.
