Joe turns out to be a character with varying shades of grey when it comes to morality. The characters were really well developed, and I felt a real empathy for some and a real loathing for others. Also the story is full of cliches. Always an outsider, Joe was at the butt end of many cruel jokes and comments at school but he could always find joy in the company of Annie. He is not at his best. The chapters had very decent length and were just flying by for me. I also enjoyed how Joe revisited his past and saw people in a different light which is often the case with people you go to school with. The deaths are very mysterious with no obvious explanation given, only a shocking message left scrawled across the wall of a bedroom, written in blood. I was frustrated by the lead character, Joe, whilst simultaneously hoping agains hope that he'd get the upper hand and that all would become clear (it does). The setting, Arnhill, which is as much an integral character as the human characters is a small village in Nottinghamshire that has seen better days. This is a brilliantly eerie novel that at times chills you to the bone. I loved Chalk Man it was one of my favourite reads this year, so when Nick and Lucy said they had read this I knew I had to read it too. One flashback scene, which evoked memories of The Exorcist, was extremely visceral in describing the violent behaviour of the possessed individual. "The Taking of Annie Thorne" is so much more than a compelling story – it's a cunning and slippery journey into the unknown. Is that a problem – not for me personally but I can't speak for others. Joe returns to his childhood village, ostensibly to work as a teacher, though right from the start, it's clear his return is based on far more than a desire to 'make a difference' in the local school. Horror / Fiction / Thriller / Mystery. It gave me a buzz waiting to find out what happened to Annie and who was the mysterious message sender. And sometimes, in a case of bully, the line between a victim and a perpetrator is usually blurred. I cannot say more about the plot without spoilers. Description of the book: Then... I love this kind of horror. As I said in my introduction above, I read this book a lot quicker than I was reading other books of a similar length. Much like the two police characters who unwittingly stumbled onto this opening crime scene, I simply didn't know what to expect, I just knew it was going to be bad. It's a place for locals not outsiders, people don't leave and even though Joe was born and raised there, he left and is now deemed as being an 'outsider' by the Arnhill residents. An excellent read, and I'd very much like the author to keep writing more please! Tudor's debut novel, The Chalk Man, is also still available. A fantastic, well-written eerily, creepy, riveting second novel from this author, what more can I say. Little here can be trusted. Thanks NetGalley for pre-release copy. Each part to this leaves you wanting more, but the interwoven modern day tale is equally gripping, and I found I couldn't put this book down and read late into the night to finish it. Her debut novel 'The chalk man' was fabulous and so it was with some trepidation that I opened her new novel. The story has a dark and eerie atmosphere. It's gory at times (the author does body-horror unnervingly well) but still remains clever. This is a creepy and atmospheric mystery tale that had this reader simply wanting to know what was ultimately behind the strange goings on. Thank you very much for allowing me to read an advanced copy! If you like this kind of idea, and in particular, if you liked the timeline in the likes of Stephen King's book, IT, this is very similar. I don't consider it a thriller or a horror book, I consider it a drama.
