It's not a long book, I finished it in just a few hours. It almost seems like he tried to strip a film noir of most everything that made it a film noir in the first place. But still, in order to get inside the head of the killer I can see that the approach taken by the director maybe worked in a way that was utterly horrific but still meaningful. His argument makes complete sense. On the surface he appears to be a dull, by-the-book law enforcer, but Lou Ford is harboring a dark side that has been with him since childhood. There are three brave lets inherent in the forgoing: he let himself see everything, he let himself write it down, then he let himself publish it.
