People be like "There's no perfect book" and all I'm thinking is, have you met Ace of Spades yet. We're seated in Lion Hall—named after one of those donors who give money to private schools that don't need it—waiting for the principal to arrive and deliver his speech in the usual order: - Welcome back for another year—glad you didn't die this summer. I won't spoil it here, but if you're a white person reading this book (and you should), it can and will make you deeply uncomfortable. So watching Get Out was really transformative for me. The elements of institutionalised racism are undeniable. The pacing of Ace of Spades is interesting. The tropes are predictable, even the characters become cookie cutters of each other, different names, different settings, same story. Still, I call him a friend, because we've known each other forever and the thought of being alone is much, much worse. However, after being unable to put down Ace of Spades for three days straight, I can confirm that this book is good. I also felt like the news people were evil, so i was right on that. Goodreads: Ace of Spades. This is truly a book I won't forget, and I can't recommend it enough. Ace of Spades is an unforgettable master class in building a palpable tension that relentlessly propels its readers forwards, all while filling them with an ever present dread. The twists and turns are absolutely incredibly well-done, the mystery of it all keeping you reading on and on. Unlike his street-smart love interest Terrell, Devon often takes things at face value, which is why I was suspicious and exasperated by the gratitude he had for his music teacher, Mr Taylor. The first half of the book was boring, the messages from Ace felt like gossip that created soapy drama instead of tension or curiosity. Ace of Spades follows Chiamaka and Devon, the only Black students who attend the prestigious Niveus Private Academy. "I can 'fix' the kinks in my hair, but not the kinks in this whole system that hates me and Devon and everyone who looks like us". Ace Of Spades Book Synopsis
How delicately and detailed white supremacy, classism, and institutionalized racism were portrayed was so heartwrenching and nuanced, and I appreciate how the author doesn't shy away from the suffering injustice brings. As a reader and someone who recommends books to people a lot, knowing what the majority of the book is about is helpful. This book was also pitched as a modern day dark academia, which is also a horribly wrong description of this novel. When it comes to tension rising, this book is a freaking masterpiece. I was so drawn to Chiamaka and I'm glad Àbíké-Íyímídé made her unlikeable, I find that a lot of criticism is given when authors write an unlikeable female protagonist and it's refreshing that the author never attempted to change who Chiamaka was. Not that people and characters have to be like-able, but they have a lot of layers, and it would have been nice to get to know them better as people, not just as shell minority representatives in a system built for them to fail. The characters' motivations are over-explained, the teenagers sound more like college students than like high schoolers, and the pacing is uneven because, for some reason, the denouement occurs at the midway point instead of at the end. Chiamaka is biracial and super rich, but she still feels like she's never going to be enough unless she pushes her ambitions further.
