One aspect of The Liar that, for all of its praises in recent weeks, has not been a point of conversation is that the album is decidedly not compressed. Certainly, an album that leaves a lasting impression. Those familiar with Patton would no doubt have tuned into her Sequestered Songwriters live streams during Covid, when she and Eady invited a number of their close friends, including Jamie Lin Wilson, Cody Jinks and Suzy Bogguss, to entertain us during those dark and uncertain times. Today, Fullbright ended the dry spell by releasing his new LP, The Liar, opening up his newfound trust in musical collaboration for the world to hear.
If that's the case, the question begged would be: Is John, by his own estimation, the storied liar? He threw together a band made up of, as Fullbright calls them, "the usual suspects. " Gavin Thomas contributes atmospheric harmonica on this song and also on the equally immersive Year Zero, a song that speaks of new beginnings and starting over. We get to hear John on the piano in When You're Here, She Knows and Very First Time. "The Liar" is really good, but that should come as no surprise to fans of the 34-year-old Fullbright, a gifted Americana songwriter whose 2012 debut album, "From the Ground Up, " was nominated for a Grammy and whose follow-up, "Songs, " earned him comparisons to Neil Young and Townes Van Zandt. Along with a few more friends stopping in to lay down takes, they finished the songs and tracked the album with engineer Jason Weinheimer in a whirlwind four days. The other six songs are all written by Bayley and they capture his impressive fingerstyle guitar prowess as various renditions of acoustic blues are woven into the arrangements. Fullbright himself finds his favorite album moment in the initially bluesy love ditty, "Safe to Say, " which begins with an understated birth but rises to culmination on the breath of a gospel choir style crescendo supporting an increasingly agonized confession of the heart's surrender to love.
