"Like seeds dreaming beneath the snow... in them is hidden the gate to eternity. "
And that's why I tried to tell the story across multiple generations so that you see it rolling forward that each generation is responsible for doing this work and making sure that the next generation understands their responsibility, and that gets passed on along with the skills to take care of it. A sweeping generational tale, The Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson was published in 2021. The Seed Keeper Review
The most stunning parts of this novel demonstrate the intimacy and love Dakhota women have with seeds that sustain their families and Dakhota culture. Certainly exhaustion and fatigue and worry, all of that is still there, but it needn't be called work. Work comes into the formula when encroaching communities use agriculture to make claims on land. When her father dies of a heart attack when she's only 12, rather than letting her live with her extended family, the authorities send Rosalie to grow up under the abusive and racist conditions of foster care. But today, that force was trapped beneath a layer of treacherous ice. The Seed Keeper tells the story of the indigenous Dakhota. If not, why do you think that is? People smiled more in spring, relieved to have survived another winter. Did you think the plan would work?
Aren't mosses a perfect example of adaptation? With unknown forces driving her, she goes on a journey to the past to learn what kind of future she might have. The different voices emerged out of a very organic process of trying to understand what it was I wanted to say about this work, not so much the work of writing, but the work of seeds, the work of cultural recovery, that work of understanding our relationship to plants and animals and seeds. The juxtaposition of generational trauma with foundational cultural beliefs raises questions about our path forward to achieve a more harmonious and equitable society. The Seed Keeper is a long, harmonious, careful braiding of songs that pay tribute to Wilson's ancestors, and the novel also reminds us that our own ancestors' lives were much closer to the soil and nature. In order to avoid burning yourself out or re-traumatizing yourself, it needs to come from a place that is restorative. When Rosalie's husband dies, she returns to her father's home in Minnesota on Dakhota land, a place she has not been since she was removed and placed into foster care as a child.
"We heard a song that was our own, sung by humans who were of the prairie, love the seeds as you love your children, and the people will survive. Both of them have to answer that in different ways. For the first few miles I drove fast, both hands gripping the wheel, as each rut in the gravel road sent a hard shock through my body. Hard to imagine, but this slow-moving river was once an immense flood of water that flowed all the way to the Mississippi River, where it formed a giant waterfall, the Owamniyamni, that could be heard from miles away. I love this book with my whole heart. The book is a blend of historical fact and fiction and brings to the fore the difficulties of the Dakhota people. Each one speaks in the first person, and what happened was, different voices emerged out of that exercise. With seeds comes discussion on food, land, Monsanto, bogs, archival research, and love.

Rosalie Iron Wing has grown up in the woods with her father, Ray, a former science teacher who tells her stories of plants, of the stars, of the origins of the Dakota people. There was so little left as it was. As debut novels go, this is engaging, well written yet heart breaking. It's a huge challenge no matter what form you're working in, to try to sift out what is useful information from what is that subjective interpretation of the viewer. Your description is making me think about how adaptation works.
But then going to Standing Rock and seeing how that work was rooted not in protest but in protection, protecting what you love, was kind of mind blowing for me. So to me, one of the safest ways to protect your seeds would be if I'm growing out let's say Dakota corn in my garden and then you're growing this corn in your garden and somebody else in another third area is growing it out and if I get hit by hail, then maybe your garden makes it and we can share those seeds back again. If you loved Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants, this is a novel along similar themes. But although her story, flash backs to her own difficult life in the late 70's to the early 2000's, it goes further back to her family ties and the war that scattered them to the present day, where the big bad industries came in, poisoning the land with their fertilizers and their genetically engineered seeds.
